On the 3rd of June 1930 Cyrus John Oliver of Lower Sticker conveyed to the village hall trustees a parcel of land to be used for the purpose of a recreation ground under the provisions of the Recreation Grounds Act 1559.   The consideration was £100.
The residents of Fore Street whose property adjoined the field were given pedestrian access to their property through the field.   Water extraction from an open stream which ran alongside their boundary with the field was permitted until mains water was connected at a later date.   As the open stream was considered a potential hazard to children it was fenced off at one point, with mixed reactions, because some children enjoyed fishing in it.   The fencing fell into disrepair and when the mains water supply became available it was decided to pipe the stream underground through the field.   A manhole still allows access in case of need.

The Fore Street residents who have no vehicular access to their property attempted to get vehicular access by means of a service road through the field – a proposal that met with considerable disapproval in the village.   Their attempt proved futile.
A small pavilion was constructed in 1953

The opening ceremony was performed by the chairman of  The Playing fields Association.   At a later date it was extended with a lockable storage room added.

Over the years a sand pit was installed – eventually removed because of health grounds, a double swing – later reduced to a single swing to abide by the revised current safety regulations was installed and a local carpenter built a timber fort with climbing net.   A roundabout was installed and is still in use as is a stainless steel slide by the pavilion – see photo below. A football pitch was created and is still used.

In 2008 the igloo and single swing were removed and new equipment was installed at a cost of around £13K. This was facilitated by a grant from Restormel DC of £10K plus smaller grants from St. Mewan PC and the CCPFA with the shortfall coming from village association funds. The new equipment included 2 junior and 2 senior swings, a springer, a "multi pondo" and a picnic bench.

This playing field is also used for events such as the annual fete, annual carnival, and latterly scarecrow displays and party in the park.

In the late 1980s possible routes for a new Sticker by-pass included one that would affect this playing field. St. Mewan parish council decided to purchase land at the top of St. Stephen Road to ensure a continuation of play facilities for children in the village. In the event, another route was eventually chosen for the bypass but the parish council still went ahead with installing limited play equipment in the new field. This area became known as the "top" playing field.
