Sticker Women’s Institute 60th Birthday Bash
The outside temperature might have been zero but there was a very warm atmosphere in Sticker Village Hall when President Coral Seward welcomed members and visitors to Sticker W.I.’s 60th birthday party.
We were very fortunate in having the new County President, Kathy Reed and Nan Collier amongst our honoured guests but the star of the evening was Mrs Violet Hocking who at age 93 years young was a founder member of Sticker W.I. all those years ago.
Visitors from our Kerensa Group were represented, these were: Probus, Ladock, Grampound and Queen’s W.I. as well as members from our ‘twin’ Foxhole.
Kathy and Violet cut the magnificent birthday cake baked and beautifully decorated by Brenda and the evening began and we raised a toast to Sticker W.I. with memories of those who have been members in the past and to those current and future members.
After a short business meeting with invitations to visit Foxhole and South Pacific we were woken up by Pol Hodge and his partner Bert Biscoe for a very entertaining evening of songs, recitations and duets, some in Cornish with English sub titles for the rest of us Emmets! Some of the audience from Probus were fluent Cornish speakers and were ahead with the jokes!
We broke for the delicious buffet supper, which was provided by the members.
The evening finished with the results of the competitions and raffle and a rousing rendition of ‘Trelawney’ led by Bert and Pol and we all went home very happy and looking forward to many more enjoyable years in the W.I. at Sticker.
DECEMBER 2011 MEETING
It was a very cheerful group who met in the Methodist Schoolroom for our Christmas meeting and
were greeted by the President, Coral Seward.
The singing of Jerusalem opened the meeting and birthday posies presented to Brenda, Sue and Della
and also for those with birthdays in January, Betty and Violet, because we have no meeting that
month. .
Few business matters to be dealt with and transport arranged for the Christmas lunch at the
college. The newsletter was a joint one with November so nothing new to discuss.
Our guests for the evening had arrived and were welcomed with a rose buttonhole each. The
Ukelele Band from Luxulyan was a happy group of players who, during the following hour and a half
took us on a most enjoyable journey back through the decades. From Vera Lynn to the Beatles and
from Elvis and Johnny Mathis, we travelled from The White Cliffs of Dover to White Christmas to
South of the Border and Jingle Bells .Everyone joined in with these rousing choruses so it was a good
job we had wetted our voices with some sherry or some non-alcoholic juice . When the band and the
members had reached the end of this lovely time a rendition of the National Anthem brought the
musical celebration to a close. A great success.
The band then joined us for hot mince pies and cream . It was then time for Secret Santa and gifts
were shared. Yes! we are all children at heart and love presents.
The competition for a top of the tree decoration was won by Catriona with Brenda as runner up.
Flower of the month winner was Doreen and Betty was second.
Our next meeting will be on February 3rd which will be our birthday meeting so more celebrations in
store we hope at the Methodist Schoolroom at 7.15p.m. We welcome new members.
