Carnival Week 2011

Carnival week started with the normal flag bunting being replaced by "knickers and bras" donated by residents.   At the end of the week they are to be donated to a third world charity operating in Africa.

The village association chairman fielded the anticipated negative comments from some village residents.   Not all the committee were enthusiastic either, but it is a democratic organisation and the vote carried the day (evening!).   Every year a plea goes out for residents to attend the carnival meeting held at the conclusion of the AGM.   Few turn up!   If you want your views or ideas acted upon, the answer is simple - give an hour of your time after the AGM and add your input to the carnival week program.

Saturday the 18th saw an improvement in the weather and the football match between Sticker Veterans and Sticker Youth was rain free.   Enthusiastic spectators braved the gale force wind to see the Youth team win 13 goals to 3!!   A bonus - the chilly wind helped the sale of burgers from the BBQ.

The football was followed by a childrens' treasure hunt starting from the field - eventually ending up - hopefully - at the Sticker AFC football field.

Thankfully Sunday - fete day - was rain free and relatively warm - the gale of the previous day had abated.   A sizeable crowd turned up to see the proceedings opened by Lord Teverson accompanied by Lady Teverson.

They spent a couple of hours talking to stallholders and spectators.    It was hoped Lord Teverson would crown the drag queen but unfortunately he had to leave before the competition took place.   Sadly, entrants were conspicuous by their absence with initially only two appearing.   However last year's queen - Ben Rushton - agreed to take part too, to swell the numbers.   Then - a last minute entry by two youngsters - put added sparkle to the proceedings causing much hilarity.   As Ben, originally to be a judge, was now part of the competition, two firefighters manning the fire engine were press ganged into acting as judges alongside "Kernow King".   The winner was Naughty Nora (Redvers Stokes) adding another line to his cv following his win of the scarecrow competition and Sticker's Got Talent during last year's carnival week.

The scarecrow competition scheduled for Monday evening was postponed until the Thursday because of bad weather but unfortunately the rain seemed to translate to a "damp squib" showing on the Thursday evening with only three entries and a handful of spectators.

However - three entries and three prizes worked out conveniently and an easy session for the judge.

Every seat in the village hall was occupied on Friday night for the Sticker's Got Talent show - staged by Sticker Village Players.   Fourteen acts competed for the coveted trophy  - or maybe the prize money was the incentive!   Guest artiste - Jonathan Tucker performed a song from Fiddler on the Roof and was not allowed to leave the stage before repeating his "Messy Doormat" rendition from last year's show.   Audience votes decided the winners of the show and the lengthy time taken to count the votes resulted in a second rendition of messy doormat with audience participation!

The voting was close and resulted in another win by Redvers Stokes.   Second place, only one vote behind, was Ella Rushton and third was Bridget Rowe.   The evening was hosted by Peter Oatey  in his inimitable amusing manner.   A great evening's entertainment.

I'm producing a DVD of the show so some short extracts may appear on this page - if/when I get time!

The weather was kind for carnival day on Saturday and the lower playing field was filled with entrants for the competitions and parade.   Two food stands and a bar catered for the "inner man" whilst waiting for the judging to complete and the parade to start.   There were fairy queens in evidence but carnival queens were conspicuous by their absence - apparently lured away to another event offering greater pecuniary awards!   Hey-ho, nevertheless a very enjoyable afternoon.

Later, in the evening, the lower playing field rocked to "party in the park" with the session started by Boho Boulevard and followed later by Straw Dogs.   Unfortunately other commitments precluded my presence although I certainly heard the music from afar!    Judging by comments received, a great evening was had by all, with the gate similar to last year.   If anyone has any suitable photographs of the evening please Email them to me for inclusion in the gallery.

So "that was the week that was!"

In all a very successful week - both entertainment wise as well as from the income point of view.   Thanks go to the carnival committee for all their work, to the background helpers in the various events, to the local participating groups and organisations, to the village shop and pub, to the companies donating prizes - and finally of course to the public who supported the week.

A final reminder - if you would like to see changes next year - spend an hour of your time attending the carnival planning meeting after the village association AGM around February next year!
