The 28th of August was crunch day with the presentation of awards in Truro.   Week St. Mary were the winners with Sticker/Hewaswater coming second and being highly commended.   We also picked up a £150 prize and a certificate which will be displayed in the village shop for a few weeks before being rehomed in the Village Hall.

Despite not winning, it was gratifying to know we had beaten other much larger villages such as St. Agnes and also Gorran Haven who entered again after being highly commended last year.   In fact it was second time lucky for Week St. Mary who also entered last year.

All those who helped in our success are to be commended.

The judges report follows:-

2009 saw Sticker/Hewaswater entering the Calor Village of the Year competition for the first time.   A long and detailed application form was eventually completed with input from many residents and duly submitted.   Earlier this summer we were advised that we had been shortlisted and would have a visit by two judges on the 16th of July.

Debbie Donnithorne and Sandra Best - the instigators of this application, then had the unenviable job of deciding on the best way to present the village to the judges bearing in mind the criteria demanded by Calor.   Briefly the remit was to demonstrate the cohesion of the village by showing how the various organisations, businesses, voluntary groups and individuals worked together to provide a better environment and create a sense of belonging for the residents.

Volunteers were called for to take part in a display in the Village hall showcasing the various activities in which they were involved.

The 16th dawned wet and windy which necessitated a shortening of the tour round the village, thank goodness the main presentation was under cover in the village hall!   Exhibitors pulled out all the stops and the judges had the opportunity to speak to everyone and discuss individual involvements.   Following a short video presentation, the Judges then headed off to see some of the completed projects that had been discussed in the hall.

There were six villages shortlisted and it must be very difficult for the judges to compare villages such as ours with a population of around 1100 to the others with populations ranging from around 500 to the largest with over 7000 and some having already entered in previous years.   Anyway - we await (with fingers crossed) the judges decision - which is due at the end of August.
