In 2006 ITV Westcountry in conjunction with the National Lottery offered 5 prizes of £50K each to communities in the region covered by Westcountry TV putting forward the best scheme to improve their local community.
Sticker Village Association entered a project to improve the lower playing field facilities in the village. Improvements included building a new pavilion with a meeting room for socialising, storage facilites, a kitchen, toilets and undercover seating. External lighting and additional items of play equipment would be installed.
As was anticipated there were a considerable number of entries to the competition from which 8 finalists were chosen to play off head to head in pairs on TV. The viewing public then voted for their favourite in each pair - the winner receiving the £50K. In addition, the loser with the highest vote from all the entries also received a cheque for £50K.
In August we were told that we had not reached the final eight, but were placed as first reserve to take over should one of the final eight back out or become ineligible for any reason. We were asked to attend a TV production training session at the Westcountry studios in September (which was very interesting) and advised that we would be advised mid October whether we would be actually progressed to the final in November.
Unfortunately none of the 8 finalists had to be replaced so our efforts came to nought! So near yet so far! However we were asked to try again next year - so who knows?
We didn't !! - however we have since applied to Restormel B.C. for a grant of £10K towards improving the play equipment and this was successful.
New play equipment will be installed during September 2008. More details of this on the Playing Field page
