St Mark's - a chapel of ease for the parish church at St Mewan

The village of Sticker grew from local mining. In 1785, Sticker was described as "a new place" and it seems that the village began as a settlement for workers in the Great Hewas Mine on its western outskirts. Great Hewas was known to have been worked in the eighteenth century, a 45-inch Boulton & Watt pumping engine being installed in the 1790s. By the nineteenth century, the mine was employing over 250 people, producing not only tin, but copper, lead, and some silver. Two smaller mines to the west, Ventonwyn and Hewas Water, worked alongside Great Hewas. The last of these mines ceased production in 1926, though the chimney of Ventonwyn engine house is still a local landmark.   An Anglican church was designed by the architect George Edmund Street in 1848/49, but was presumably never built. The current St Mark's Mission Church was designed by James Piers St Aubyn and opened in 1877.

We are a friendly and welcoming group of folk who are always pleased to see new faces.

We have great fun with our fund raising activities - especially our annual themed banquet held in the Spring and our Autumn Harvest Safari Lunch.

We have social events too, so it is not all fund raising! We have had bowling evenings, meals, picnics and get together DVD evenings.

In this materialistic world many people are looking for meaning in their life and often find they need to develop their spiritual side - do come along and see if we fit your needs! We have Quiet Times every now and then which are very refreshing for the soul!

St Mewan also hold Bible Study Meetings on Thursday evenings in St Mewan Church Hall.

ST MARK’S REPORT – JULY 2011

The weather hasn’t been so good lately but we were blessed with dry weather for St Mewan Fete and Sticker Fete on 18th and 19th June respectively. Having these events is a great way to meet and chat to people especially those we haven’t seen since we saw them last year! The amount made on the bottle stall wasn’t great but every little helps. The cake stall and £1 stall at Sticker Fete did well and it was a lovely day.

We had a concert on 9th July by Halcyon Dayz and this year it was held in St Mark’s Church Hall. The members of the group are such wonderful singers and treated us to a varied, interesting and amusing repertoire of songs and light operetta. Thanks very much to them for giving so freely of their time and talent! Thanks also to the folk who provided a scrumptious array of food and a great selection of raffle prizes.

Unusually we had two funerals in St Mark’s Church within a week of each other at the beginning of June and both families admired our little Church and the feeling of peace and tranquillity experienced there.

The poor weather has put paid to our plans to have a work party in the grounds of the Church but we will be ready when we get a dry spell again.

Don’t forget to put our Harvest Safari in your Diary – it will be held on 11th September and we look forward to a beautiful sunny day so you can enjoy the experience in the dry and have the opportunity sit out in the various gardens! Further details to follow but if you would like to book your place now please phone me on 63394.

Enjoy the rest of the summer!

Best wishes

Sybilla

Below is an amusing transcript of a cutting from a newspaper given to me by Derrick – I hope it makes you smile!

It’s Raining Men

I read about the treasures of old age some years ago – and now I’m experiencing them. I have become a frivolous old girl seeing some fine gentlemen every day.

When I wake up in the morning, Will Power helps me out of bed to greet someone I don’t like: Arthur Ritis. He knows he’s unwelcome, but insists on taking me from joint to joint.

Then it’s time for Mr Kellogg followed by the refreshing company of Mr Tetley.

Al Zeimer is jealous – he lurks in the background but I ignore him. What a life! After a busy day I’m glad to go to bed with Johnny Walker.

Someone said, at my age, I should be thinking of the hereafter. Well I do. In the kitchen, the bedroom and in the garden I stop and ask myself "Now what am I here after?"

ST MARK’S CHURCH VANDALISM

The congregation of St Mark’s were all shocked by the vandalism to the Church windows on two separate occasions just before Christmas when stones were thrown at the West Window causing breakage in 4 or 5 places and on the next occasion a large boulder was thrown at the small window near the door to the vestry. Three youngsters were seen running away from the Church - it is believed are local lads. Quotations to repair the damage amount to about £800.

We are delighted to report that the community of Sticker has rallied to the aid of the Church. The Landlords of the Hewas Inn, David and Amanda Rowe kindly hosted a very successful Coffee Morning on 29th January which raised £280 towards the repairs. Grateful thanks also to the members of the Church and other ladies who provided cakes and their time, also to Martin’s Bakery for providing additional delicious baked goods.

This was followed by another fund raising event at the Hewas Inn the next evening on 30th January in the form of a Quiz Evening which raised a further £175 towards the windows. Thanks again to David and Amanda for dedicating the proceeds of this event towards the Church. Thanks also to the Quiz Masters Malcolm Vian and Bernard Barry and also to Mike Thompson for his pictorial quiz which caused much head scratching and for his additional cash donation.

St Mark’s has received other kind donations towards the repairs and would like to thank all who have supported us for their generosity.

It is heart warming to realise that the Community values and supports its local Church in this way and good to know that Community Spirit is alive and well. The money raised so far has enabled repair works to commence and we look forward to being draught free very soon!

P.S. St Mark’s are having an Easter Prize Raffle Draw from 2nd April and Mandy and Ian Bissett at the Londis Shop have very kindly said we can sell tickets at the shop. The draw will take place on 23rd April at the Hewas Inn when David and Amanda have offered to host another Coffee Morning. There are also collection boxes in the Pub and Shop for any additional donations.

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR SUPPORT AND PLEASE CONTINUE TO GIVE GENEROUSLY SO WE CAN RAISE THE BALANCE OF THE MONEY NEEDED TO PAY FOR THE REPAIRS.

St Marks News – January 2011

We are delighted that work on the Church Hall Roof commenced on 1st September 2010 following the award of a £10,000 Lottery Grant. This, together with money we have accrued from our fund raising activities meant we could go ahead with the project. The works comprised stripping the existing natural slate cladding to the main hall roof, providing modern insulation to current standards and refixing the slates using additional matching slates as necessary and also included treatment of timbers, renewal of fascia boards, barge boards and rainwater goods. Our builder, Glyn Keast finished ahead of schedule and below budget which we were very pleased about. This completes the works and refurbishment to the St Mark’s Church Hall and we are now warm and cosy!

The weather in December with heavy rain, snow, icy roads and freezing temperatures made it too cold and unsafe to go ahead with the Quiet Evening, the Carol Service and Casserole Evening. It felt very strange without a chance to sing Carols so if you also missed out and feel deprived come and join us on 26th February for our postponed Casserole evening with a Christmas Carol singalong. It will be held in St Mark’s Church Hall at 7 pm with tickets at £10. Book your place by phoning Sybilla on 63394.

At the beginning of January we had two incidents of vandals throwing stones at the windows of St Mark’s Church. Three local youths are believed to be responsible and the incidents have been reported to the Police however no-one has yet been apprehended. It is going to cost £800 to repair the damage, this expense and the inconvenience of sorting it all out is upsetting but we have to keep going!

There are collection boxes in the Hewas Inn and Sticker Stores for donations towards the cost of the repairs and the Pub are hosting a Coffee morning for us on 29th January with cakes donated by St Mark’s ladies and the Pub Quiz on 30th January will be in aid of St Mark’s too. Thanks very much to David and Amanda for supporting us so wholeheartedly! If you can, please come along or throw a couple or pounds (or more) into the collection boxes – it will be much appreciated!

Our Marvellous Meals are back again this year but for details of costs, places available and to book a place please contact the hosts direct on the phone numbers in brackets after their names. We are kicking off with a Mexican Evening on 16th April with John & Stephanie Cornish (69105). On 28th May Chris and Sybilla Davis are hosting a Danish Evening (63394). In June there will be an afternoon tea with Val and in September an Evening Meal with Sue Lawson (details of these two to follow later)

Saturday 7th May is the St Marks Banquet and this year due to it’s proximity to the Royal Wedding we have decided on a "Right Royal Evening" with food, music and costumes reflecting all things British – please mark this date in your diary. Further details nearer the time on posters and in the next Parish News.

WORKS DUE TO START ON ST MARKS CHURCH HALL

Improvements to St Marks Church Hall will commence on

1st September 2009 and will include demolishing and replacing the lobby and toilet, providing disabled access, replacing the existing windows with double glazed units and installing a central heating system.

We have been lucky enough to have secured a substantial grant from the SITA Cornwall Trust and are also pleased to acknowledge additional financial help from St Mewan Parish Council. May we also take this opportunity of thanking all those who have supported our fund raising in any way! We continue to fund raise for the project and your continued support will be much valued.

We apologise for any disturbance to neighbours during the course of the works, it is hoped this can be kept to a minimum. The improvements should be completed by the end of the year.

Mamma Mia Themed Evening and Meal on Saturday 18th April 2009

Another fantastically successful evening organised by the St Mark’s Action Group. The Church Hall was decorated with images of Abba, scenes from the Mamma Mia Movie and posters, photos and information about all aspects of Greek life, food, religion, the Olympics and ancient Greece.

The food was based on Greek recipes and absolutely delicious – St Mark’s has a reputation for producing superb food! Greek music played as people arrived and between the first courses, then our wonderful pianist, Steve Rowse had us singing along to Abba songs before and after the sweet course. We all had a terrific time and the Hall buzzed with conversation. Certain intrepid folk also took part in a Greek Zorba type dance up the aisle, which caused much hilarity!

The money raised is going towards providing disabled access and toilets to the Church Hall. Thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of this evening and to our guests for coming!

St Mark’s Western Evening – 19th April 2008

Wow, what an evening! St Mark’s Western Evening was another great success with a good time had by all! We had Red Indians, Cowboys, cowgirls, and a saloon girl all whooping it up at our 8th annual themed evening! It was great to have so many people dressing up for the event!

Every year the St Mark’s team transform the Church Hall and this time it became a Western Saloon complete with our own honky tonk piano player Steve Rowse – our very grateful thanks to him for providing the musical atmosphere for the evening and a good sing a long which we all enjoyed! Other entertainment was provided in the shape of tales of the Wild West, performed by members of the team with a quiz for people to complete in between courses!

The windows were bedecked with lasso’s, cacti, horse tack, Red Indian headdresses and blankets, Cowboy boots and hats, as well as Annuals of favourite wild west stories, while on the walls we had pictures of various well known western actors, Indians and other characters. From the rafters hung American flags, mobiles and a noose in case that pesky Billy the Kid showed his face!

The Chuck Wagon provided a superior spread of food with Sweetcorn Chowder, Pastrami and bread and Florida Cocktail to start with followed by Beef Chilli, Boston Baked beans with sausages and Pork Casserole served with baked potatoes, peas and sweetcorn for main course and then some luscious desserts – American Blueberry Cheesecake, Apple Pie and Pecan Pie all served with whipped cream.

ST MARK’S PIRATE EVENING – 28TH APRIL 2007

During the month before the event it was all hands on deck cleaning the Church Hall and then

decorating it - always a big job but great fun too! Somehow we got all the props together and

created a desert island with palm trees on the stage with a treasure chest brimming with booty!

There was a pirate ship on the horizon and the mast of another in the foreground with a ship’s bell

(which was useful to get attention when announcements were made).

We had displays in the windows about pirates and were very grateful to John Cornish and Peter

Oatey for making up blackout boards to cover the windows - a job we have been meaning to do for a

long time!

The accordian players were absolutely terrific once again and many thanks to them for providing the

music and for the sing-a-long! They played all evening and only stopped when we had some

readings of pirate tales and sea faring poems.

Everyone involved deserves huge thanks for all that they did to make this one of the most

successful evenings we have ever had – without such wonderful camaraderie and team effort we

would never be able to accomplish what we do!

Very grateful thanks also to all our guests for coming and supporting us - we appreciate your

enthusiasm and enjoyment of our evenings. We were full to capacity and even had to turn some folk

away – so do get in quick next year to book your places! We raised around £650 which is a good

step forward in our fund raising efforts towards improvements to the Church Hall, especially the

toilets.
